Posterior nasal spine
Description
This is the spine-like projection from the posterosuperior midline of the horizontal plate of the palatine bone. It provides an attachment surface for the musculus uvulae.
Etymology
The term nasal comes from the Latin nasus that arises from the Sanskrit term nasa, both meaning nose. Spine is derived from the Latin spina meaning a thorn. Anatomists use the term to designate pointed projections of bone.
