Palatine spine
Description
This is a small projection that arises from the middle, posterior margin of the maxilla near its junction with the palatine bone. It projects over the greater palatine vessels as they pass forward on the inferior surface of the palate.
Etymology
The term palatine derives from the Latin term palatum designating the roof of the mouth. It is of doubtful origin, possibly related to the Latin words pabular or pascere meaning to feed. Spine is derived from the Latin spina meaning a thorn. Anatomists use the term to designate pointed projections of bone.
