Lesser palatine foramina
Other Terms: Lesser palatine foramina, Foramina palatina minora, Foramens petits palatins
Description
These are small foramina exiting on the base of the pyramidal process. They sit posteromedial to the third molar tooth. They carry the lesser palatine vessels and nerves from the lesser palatine canal onto the posterior surface of the hard palate.
Etymology
The term palatine derives from the Latin term palatum designating the roof of the mouth. It is of doubtful origin, possibly related to the Latin words pabular or pascere meaning to feed. Foramen is the Latin term designating a hole-like opening. It comes from the Latin forare meaning to bore or perforate.
