Vestibulocochlear nerve [VIII]

Other Terms: Acoustic nerve, Eighth cranial nerve, Vestibulocochlear nerve tree, Statoacoustic nerve, Stato-acoustic nerve, Cochleovestibular nerve, Acoustic nerve (Crosby), Cochlear-vestibular nerve, Vestibulocochlear nerve [VIII], Nervus vestibulocochlearis, Nervus statoacusticus, Cranial Nerve VIII, Nervus octavus, Nervus vestibulocochlearis [VIII]

Description

The eighth cranial or vestibulocochlear nerve is right below the facial nerve. Two roots come off of the nuclei of the vestibulocochlear nerve. The lateral root arises primarily from the accessory nucleus. The mesial root arises from the chief nucleus. Its superficial origin is external to the facial nerves superficial origin. It is from the groove between the olivary and restiform bodies of the medulla oblongata. The Vestibulocochlear nerve performs the special sense of hearing. It supplies the internal ear. The lateral root travels to the cochlear nerve, supplies the cochlea, and is the nerve hearing. The mesial root is known as the vestibular nerve and supplies the vestibule and semicircular canals. It monitors equilibrium of the body. The vestibulocochlear nerve has two major branches: the vestibular nerve and the cochlear nerve.
