Orbital surface of the maxilla
Other Terms: Facies orbitalis (Maxilla), Facies orbitalis corporis maxillae
Description
The orbital surface is a thin plate of bone that forms the superior boundary of the body. It creates most of the floor of the orbit and the roof of the maxillary sinus. It contains the infraorbital canal carrying vessels and nerves toward the face.
Etymology
Orbital arises from the Latin orbis meaning a circle. Medieval anatomists were the first to apply this term to the eye socket. The word surface comes from the Old French sur meaning above and face.
Latin
Facies orbitalis corporis maxillae
