Ethmoid infundibulum
Description
This is the funnel-like region at the anterosuperior end of the semilunar hiatus that leads to the anterior ethmoidal air cells. This channel may also connect with the frontal sinus via the frontonasal duct.
Etymology
The term ethmoid comes from the Greek term ethmos meaning sieve. Galen called the bone the sieve-like bone because of the many small foramina that transmit the olfactory nerves to the nasal cavity. Infundibulum is a Later Latin word meaning a funnel. This word arises from the earlier Latin word infundere meaning to pour into. This in turn arises from the Latin in plus fundus meaning bottom.
