Optic nerve [II]
Other Terms: Second cranial nerve, Optic nerve [II], Nervus opticus, Nerve II, Nervus opticus [II], Nerf optique
Description
The second cranial or optic nerve is the nerve of vision. It arises from the optic commissure, which is formed by the union of the optic tracts. The optic tracts arise from the corpora geniculata, the nates of the corpora quadrigemina, and the optic thalami. Each tract is composed of three sets of fibers: an outer, middle, and inner. The outer set of these fibers pass directly to the optic nerve of the same side. The middle set passes to the optic nerve of the opposite side. The inner set passes to the optic tract of the opposite side.
