Description
The metathalamus is the portion of the thalamus that is composed of lateral and medial geniculate bodies. The metathalamus processes information received from the auditory and the optic circuits. Fibers of the optic nerve terminate in the lateral geniculate body. The medial geniculate body protrudes slightly from the posteroinferior surface of the thalamus. It processes nerve impulses from the auditory cortex.
