Infratemporal crest
Other Terms: Crista infratemporalis, CrĂȘte infratemporale
Description
The rounded, transversely directed crest on the lateral surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid. This landmark separates the upper lateral surface, for the attachment of the temporalis muscle from the smaller inferior surface, for the attachment of the upper fibers of the lateral pterygoid muscle.
Etymology
Infratemporal is from the Latin infra meaning below and temporal meaning time. The temporal region is the side of the skull where gray hairs often first appear, showing the ravages of time. Crest is a term applied to a ridge of bone. The Latin term used for this is crista.
