Central canal
Other Terms: Central canal, Ventricle of spinal cord, Canalis centralis, Canal central, Canalis centralis medullae spinalis
Description
The central canal is located in the center of the gray matter. It is visible to the naked eye as a very small spot. It is lined with epithelium, which has its origin from the embryonic cells lining the neural canal. It is continuous above with the fourth ventricle of the brain. This canal is the remnant of the original neural canal of the embyro from the walls of which the spinal cord is formed.
