Sulcus for transverse sinus
Other Terms: Sulcus sinus transversi
Description
This is the groove that houses the transverse dural venous sinus. There are right and left grooves that arise at the internal occipital protuberance and curve laterally to the edge of the bone. To the ridges of the groove attach the tentorium cerebelli.
Etymology
Sulcus is Latin for groove or a long, shallow, open channel in the bone. Transverse is from the Latin transversus literally meaning to turn across. It comes from the Latin trans meaning across and the verb versere meaning to turn. Sinus is Latin for a curve, fold, bay, or gulf. In anatomy it can describe anything from a large, hollow cavity to a concave groove-like channel.
