Hard palate
Other Terms: Palatum durum, Palais dur, Harter Gaumen
Description
The hard palate is the horizontal plate of bone crossing between the maxillary alveolar arch that separates the oral cavity from the nasal cavity. The maxilla forms the anterior two-thirds of this boney plate and the horizontal processes of the palatine bones form the posterior third of the hard palate. It is ensheathed in a dense, tough mucoperiosteum. The hard palate is supplied by the nasopalatine and posterior palatine vessels.
