Lamella
Description
This is the cylindrical plate of mineralized matrix that forms the successive rings around the central neurovascular canal of the osteon. They range in thickness from three to seven micrometers. Adjacent lamellae are separated by a thin highly mineralized interlamellar region. Adjacent lamellae also have different planes of collagen fiber and bone crystal orientation.
Etymology
Lamella is the Latin diminutive form of lamina and means a small thin plate.
