Posterior gluteal line
Other Terms: Linea glutealis posterior, Linea glutea posterior, Ligne glutéale postérieure
Description
This line on the external surface of the iliac ala is the shortest of the three gluteal lines. It begins near the posterior limit of the iliac crest and courses inferiorly to the posterior inferior iliac spine. Anterior to this line is the posterior limit of the gluteus medius muscle, while posterior to this is the roughened surface for the iliac attachment of the gluteus maximus muscle.
Etymology
Gluteal is a term that arises from the Greek word gloutos meaning the rump or buttocks. Homer also used the term in the Iliad to describe the hip. The word line arises from the Latin term linea. Anatomists use the term to describe a thin, linear demarcation on a bone.
