Intercondylar fossa
Other Terms: Fossa intercondylaris (Femur), Intercondylar fossa, Fossa intercondylaris, Fosse intercondylaire
Description
This is the deep notch between the two condyles. Its lateral wall has a smooth shallow surface serving as the proximal attachment site for the anterior cruciate ligament. Its medial wall contains the femoral attachment site of the posterior cruciate ligament. Like most ligament and tendon attachment sites these surfaces are lacking nutrient foramina.
Etymology
Condylar comes from the Greek word kondulos meaning knuckle or knob. When combined with the Latin term inter meaning between the term means between the knuckles. The Latin fossa literally translates as a ditch, trench, or hole.
