Subscapular fossa
Other Terms: Fossa subscapularis, Fosse subscapulaire
Description
The subscapular fossa is the extremely shallow concavity on the anterior or ventral (therefore, sub) surface of the scapula. From this broad surface, which ranges from smooth to slightly ridged, arises the subscapularis muscle.
Etymology
Subscapular arises from sub meaning below and scapula from the Greek term scapter for a broad flat digging instrument resembling a spade or trowel. Fossa derives from the Latin verb fodere meaning to dig. From this, fossa came to mean a trench, ditch, or hole.
